simple home updates / beginner projects

It’s been a super rainy, dreary week. This summer has been full of sunshine, so I can’t say I’m totally hating this chilly, Autumn weather. Its gotten me in the mood for a seasonal change: pumpkin candles, fall beers, new books to read, and some of my new fall sweaters which I’m excited about!

In this post, I wanted to encourage and inspire some of you to tackle those projects that feel pushed off, or those “I’ll get to that later” tasks . The ones that are “easy” but you actually never get around to. I’ve recently been doing the same, and I’m impressed with the outcome of all of these. Sometimes the small details are where it’s at.

A big intimidating project to me is curb appeal, and further more, porch appeal. Now I’m no landscape artist or master gardener, but I do attempt to keep our front area looking nice. Whether it’s cleaning the cobwebs, sweeping the porch, or just trying my best to keep our front porch planters looking somewhat alive. I think just making your your sidewalk is trimmed off from weeds and grass, can make such a big difference as well.

Something that was bothering me for a while, and I know this is my inner designer coming out here, were the house numbers used above our garage. They were this old, plastic, 1995 font. I think this goes along well with the curb appeal, and updating them can help give your neighbors (or if you are selling, your potential buyers) the perspective of care and thought you put into your home.

I picked up some new, modern sans serif type numbers at Home Depot, and we installed these a few weekends ago. Now I’m constantly looking at everyone’s house numbers haha! I love that they float above the wood and they give off a really clean, modern vibe.

Another really fun, and ambitious project for beginners/new homeowners can be changing your locks, and also changing your door hardware. I’ve made my way around our entire house now and have successfully changed every door handle in the house. It came to my surprise how many different door knobs and handles there are available. This gives your interior such a fantastic and updated look, and it can be so inexpensive!

We were not crazy over these super brassy, golden 90s knobs that were original to our home (built in 1998), so we switched them to a matte black handle with a more soft and modern style.

It may seem super intimidating, but when taking your doorknobs off, you sort of get the hang of the mechanics, so then placing your new fixtures on is a breeze! Easier than people may think, and the reward is so much prettier!

Another super quick and easy fix is something a lot of people may not even care about, but I think it also helps make a big difference in the overall updating of your home. Door Stoppers! We had these really old and rusted door stoppers everywhere in our home, they kind of actually grossed me out a little. They are super cheap at Lowes for a replacement, maybe even under $3 a piece, and they just screw right into where your old doorstopper was!

One of the most exciting, and most talked about transformation pieces can be swapping out a new light fixture! This is probably my favorite part of any project, choosing the light fixture. It can make the biggest statement in a positive or negative way, obviously we want it to be positive! I LOVE our light fixtures we’ve changed in our house so far. Most of them are actually from Wayfair!

And last, but not least, is probably the most obvious of all, fresh paint. Paint does wonders my friends. Have you checked out how it completely transformed our kitchen? Our Lachlan’s Bathroom? Probably my most favorite projects so far.

We’ve painted almost every room in our house now, besides our main living and dining rooms. Never underestimate the power of paint, and now with so much fun technology in actual paint formulas, there is so much fun spray paint, chalk paint, and stain options out there. They even make a limestone textured spray paint now! It is very intriguing, I might have to get some and do a fun DIY with it. All this to say, don’t be afraid to take risks. Get on the out there and experiment. All these little easy-seeming projects are the foundation of home Reno and DIY, and will always help you in the future with knowing more and more for years to come!

Have you ever attempted any of these updates? I was pretty surprised by myself once I began changing doorknobs, updating lights, paint, etc, by how easy, and such a big difference these all made. Hope everyone has an amazing rest of the week! My mom and grandma are on their way here tomorrow, and we are so blessed and excited to be able to spend time with them this weekend.
